What is REM Sleep and Why Is It Important?

April 15th, 2024

Often talked about in the world of health and wellness, REM sleep is the phase of sleep characterised by Rapid Eye Movement (REM), dreaming, increased brain activity and a faster heart rate and breathing. During a normal night’s sleep, a person will go through 4-5 sleep cycles of 90 minutes that include a REM sleep phase.

Why is it important?

According to the Sleep Foundation, REM sleep is important for a variety of vital brain functions including:

Memory: REM sleep helps the brain to consolidate and commit new learnings from the day into memory.

Emotional processing: The amygdala, the part of your brain that processes emotions, is activated during REM sleep. Dreams are also thought to play a role in processing emotions and occur during REM sleep.

Preparing for waking up: It is thought that because REM sleep activates our central nervous system and is the final phase of sleep, it may help us wake up.

Deprivation of REM sleep can disrupt the brain’s ability to generate new cells, and may cause problems with learning and memory, making it a vital part of getting a quality night’s sleep.

If you have problems with getting quality sleep, you might find this helpful.
