3 Foods & Drinks to Avoid Before Bed

October 13th, 2016

1. Indian Curry

It’s not so much the food in itself that can keep you awake, but rather the heavy spices used in Indian cooking, and the protein in the chicken (if it is a chicken dish). Spices such as tabasco and mustard have the potential to cause heartburn (an irritating and uncomfortable reason to be kept awake). Combine this with a food that is high in fat, and it’s a recipe for insomnia.

2. Alcohol

“Alcohol of any kind is “terrible” for sleep”, says Rosenberg, Ph.D., CEO of the National Sleep Foundation. Why? “It metabolizes quickly in your system and causes you to wake up multiple times during the night.”

Amanda Gardner shares that“one study found that a glass of bourbon or vodka mixed with caffeine-free soda at bedtime increased the amount of time women spent awake during the night by 15 minutes. It also reduced nightly sleep time by 19 minutes and diminished quality of sleep.”

What else could alcohol possibly do wrong? IT MAKES YOU SNORE! According to Rosenberg “Alcohol makes snoring worse so it will impact you and your potential bed partner”.

So next time you consume a glass of wine immediately before bed, be aware that you may just be affecting the quality of your sleep.

3. Coffee

Gardner says, “Coffee contains caffeine, which is a central nervous stimulant.” What does this mean? Having a cup of coffee too close to bedtime WILL keep you up at night.

Timothy Roehrs, Ph.D., a senior scientist with Henry Ford Sleep Disorder and Research Center in Detroit says “of course, people differ in their sensitivity to caffeine and that’s usually based on how much caffeine you’re accustomed to consuming.”

If you are unaware of your tolerance, avoid coffee close to your bedtime. Always remember that the best time to have a cup of coffee is between 9-10 am.
