Getting rid of an old mattress doesn’t have to mean taking it to the tip. There’s a much better way to dispose of your mattress, which benefits the environment as well as the community.
In fact, proper mattress disposal is a massive issue in Australia. Australians change their mattresses every 8-10 years, which results in 1.6-1.8 million mattresses being sent to landfill every year. By being more conscious about the way you dispose of your mattress, you can reduce waste and give back to others.
Here’s how to go about disposing of your old mattress.
Mattress Disposal
A good rule of thumb is to think of landfill as a last resort for your mattress. If it’s in very poor condition, you should arrange for hard waste disposal. Depending on where you live, this could be an out-of-pocket expense or something the council will happily handle for you.
If your mattress is in good hygiene condition and a mattress protector has been used on it over the years, you might want to donate it to a local charity (baring in mind the lifespan of a mattress is up to 10 years). If you don’t think your mattress is in good enough nick to be reused but has components that could be salvaged, consider recycling it.
Whatever you do, you should never leave a mattress out on the street or attempt to dispose of it along with your regular household rubbish!
Mattress Removal
One of the trickiest parts of getting rid of your old mattress is actually removing the mattress from your home. If you purchase a new mattress from Sleepy’s, we’ll handle the old mattress removal for you.
Mattress Recycling
Of course, the best way to get rid of your old mattress is to recycle it. It’s now possible to repurpose up to 75% of an old mattress, with timber frames being turned into mulch or wood chips, steel springs being used for construction, and the foam being turned into carpet underlay. There’s no need to take the mattress apart yourself, as the recycling facility will take care of that step for you.
According to mattress recycling social enterprise Soft Landing, every 10 tones of salvaged materials equates to:
- Four cars being taken off the road forever
- Enough electricity being generated to power 14.5 households
- Enough water being saved to fill 3.5 backyard pools.
As mentioned above, it can also be a great idea to donate your mattress. This allows people in need to access affordable bedding and a good night’s sleep.
